Surrounded by ocean on all sides, Japan has one of the largest fishing industries in the world. The SSW fishery and aquaculture field covers both capture fisheries (fishing gear repair, capturing marine animals, processing) and aquaculture (breed/material management, harvesting).

Key regions include Hokkaido (salmon, crab), Shizuoka (tuna), and Hiroshima (oyster farms). Workers may be dispatched seasonally similar to the agriculture sector.

Core Job Responsibilities

Fishery Operations

Repairing fishing gear, capturing and sorting marine animals, operating fishing vessels, and onboard processing.

Aquaculture Management

Managing fish farms — feeding, water quality monitoring, breed/seed management, and harvest of farmed species.

Processing & Packaging

Cleaning, filleting, freezing, and packaging fresh seafood products for domestic and export markets.

Equipment Maintenance

Maintaining nets, traps, pumps, aerators, and small marine engines used in fishery and aquaculture.
